Women’s Tennis Shuts Out Both Opponents at Spring Season Opener

COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 20 South Carolina women’s tennis had a strong start to the spring portion of the 2024-25 season, sweeping both opponents 5-0 at the home opener against Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

Charleston Southern   

Misa Malkin and Bella Bergqvist Larsson got the day started for the Gamecocks, nearly sweeping Emmie Moore and Brenda Yoris 6-1 for the first doubles win. Sarah Hamner and Helena Buchwald clinched the doubles point for South Carolina in similar fashion, defeating Noa Boyd and Amila Jusufbegovic 6-1.  

In singles action, Larsson opened the Gamecocks’ scoring. The freshman dominated her opponent 6-1, 6-0 to earn her first collegiate career win in singles for her first start representing the Garnet & Black. No. 17 Hamner kept the Gamecocks rolling, claiming her win 6-1, 6-3. Buchwald finished next, putting up a 6-3, 6-2 win. Malkin rounded out singles action for the Gamecocks within seconds after Buchwald, taking a 6-2, 6-1 win to clinch South Carolina’s 5-0 victory over the Buccaneers.  

Coastal Carolina 

Larsson and Lauren Friedman carried South Carolina’s success into the second match of the day, defeating Anna Babayan and Paula Cabrer 6-0 to win the first doubles match against Coastal from court 5. Hamner and Buchwald clinched the first point of the match for the Gamecocks with a 6-1 win over Nicole Abel and Brunelle Kouam.  

Larsson rounded out her collegiate debut with her second singles win of the day, overpowering her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Buchwald earned South Carolina a 3-0 lead over Coastal Carolina following a 6-1, 6-2 win. No. 39 Carnicella (6-1, 6-2) and Malkin (6-2, 6-0) won their matches back-to-back, giving the Garnet & Black its second 5-0 win of the day.  

The Gamecocks continue the season on the road, traveling to Charlottesville, VA for the ITA Kickoff Weekend to face Duke in the first round on Friday, Jan. 24 at 4 p.m.
