Gamecocks Sweep North Florida at ITA Kickoff Weekend
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team broke its two-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon in the consolation match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at Florida State, sweeping North Florida 4-0.
The Gamecocks took control from the start off the match, quickly securing the doubles point with dominant performances. Casey Hoole and Sean Daryabeigi teamed up for a commanding 6-1 win, while Lucas da Silva and Jelani Sarr clinched the point moments later with an identical 6-1 victory on court one.
Carrying the momentum into singles, South Carolina established control early as five of their six players claimed first-set victories. No. 55 Daryabeigi was the first to finish, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win from the No. 3 spot. In his opening set he surged to a 5-0 streak after an initial 1-1 deadlock. His dominance continued in the second set, where Youssef Labbene managed to win only two games.
Karahan topped his opponent in straight sets of 6-4. Despite trailing early in the first set the sophomore managed to find his rhythm, breaking serve to win the last three games. The second set played out in similar fashion with Karahan and Gianluca Filoramo trading games until Karahan broke away at 4-4 to clinch the set.
Hoole ultimately clinched the match from the No. 1 position after winning 6-4, 6-2 against Andreas Scott. The Gamecock got off to a slow start, trailing Scott 0-3 before staging a comeback to take the set and maintain control throughout the second.
The Gamecocks return to the courts next week, hosting Queens and College of Charleston for a midweek doubleheader on Wed., Jan. 29 at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.
