Women’s Tennis Sweeps New Mexico at ITA Kickoff Weekend
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Gamecocks dominated New Mexico with a commanding 4-0 victory in the consolation match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday evening, notching their third win of the season.
Doubles action began with a shaky start for No. 20 South Carolina, as Sarah Hamner and Lauren Friedman were outpaced, falling 2-6 and giving the Lobos an early break. However, Misa Malkin and Bella Bergkvist Larsson responded emphatically, delivering a 6-2 win to even out the score. The doubles point came down to court 2, where Olympe Lancelot and Kaitlyn Carnicella faced off against Maud Vandeputte and Sofia Taborga. The Gamecocks surged ahead with a 3-0 lead before the Lobos narrowed the gap to 3-2. Lancelot and Carnicella maintained their composure, sealing the decisive point with a 6-3 triumph.
The Gamecocks carried their momentum into singles play, setting the tone by capturing first-set victories across all six courts. Misa Malkin secured the first singles point, overwhelming Sarah O’Connor in straight sets. After a brief exchange of games in the opening set, Malkin shifted gears, reeling off five consecutive games to win 6-1. She maintained her dominance in the second set, delivering a flawless 6-0 shutout.
Sarah Hamner and Bella Bergkvist Larsson followed suit, dismantling their opponents with identical straight-set victories, 6-1, 6-0, to clinch the match for South Carolina.
