Women’s Tennis Faces Clemson on the Road

CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 22 South Carolina women’s tennis team heads to Clemson on Feb. 11 for a Palmetto Series matchup at 4:00 p.m.

Gamecock Notables

  • South Carolina (3-2) is coming off of a loss against Georgia Tech on the road this past Saturday. After a late rally attempt the Gamecocks fell 2-4 to the Yellow Jackets in a close matchup.
  • South Carolina struck first early in the dual match as Sarah Hamner and Helena Buchwald upset No. 74 Given Roach and Alejandra Cruz 6-2 to win the first doubles match. The Yellow Jackets quickly responded, winning from court 3 which left the decision down to Kaitlyn Carnicella and Bella Bergkvist Larsson. The Gamecocks battled hard, attempting to comeback after being down 0-2 but were ultimately topped 7-5 by Kylie Bilchev and Scarlett Nicholson which provided Georgia Tech with the doubles point.
  • The Gamecocks started off slow in singles action as the Yellow Jackets claimed first set wins on five courts. Hamner fell to Nicholson which gave Georgia Tech its second point of the match. Buchwald then got South Carolina on the board after winning her match in straight sets before Larsson tied it all up  to 2-2 after topping her opponent in a three-set victory. Georgia Tech ultimately secured the clinch after picking up two more singles wins.
  • In dual matches, Misa Malkin is undefeated in singles with a 3-0 record. Freshmen Buchwald (3-1) and Larsson (4-1) have strong records as well.
  • Carnicella and Hamner represent the team in the latest edition of the ITA singles and doubles rankings, released on Feb. 5. Hamner is No. 21 and Carnicella sits at No. 61 for singles. The two rank No. 59 for doubles.

Scouting the Tigers

  • Clemson has a 5-1 record so far this season going into Tuesday’s match with their only loss coming from a then-No. 4 Oklahoma State.
  • The Tigers are undefeated at home as they started off 2025 with three consecutive victories at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility.
  • Most recently Clemson narrowly defeated Charlotte 4-3 this past Friday on the road, bouncing back after dropping the doubles point.

Series History

  • The Gamecocks lead the Tigers in the all-time series record, 32-28.
  • South Carolina’s longest win streak was eight straight games from 2018 to 2022. Clemson ended the streak in 2023.
  • The last time the two programs faced each other was in Columbia last season where the Gamecocks topped the Tigers 6-1.
