Gamecocks Host Saturday Doubleheader

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team returns home on Sat., Feb. 15 to host a doubleheader against Wake Forest and Western Carolina at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. respectively.

The matches are slated to happen on the outdoor courts but depending on the weather they may be moved to the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center.

Gamecock Notables

  • South Carolina enters these matches with a 3-3 record for the dual season, looking to break its two-game losing streak following a 1-4 loss to in-state rival Clemson on the road.
  • The Gamecocks picked up a doubles win from Kaitlyn Carnicella and Olympe Lancelot from the No. 2 position as the two topped their opponents 6-3. Clemson responded by clinching the doubles point, winning on courts 1 and 3. Sarah Hamner earned the lone point for South Carolina, winning her singles match in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2. The Tigers secured their win by sweeping the remaining five courts.
  • Freshmen Bella Bergkvist Larsson and Helena Buchwald have been new strong additions to the lineup, winning four and three matches respectively from the No. 5 and 6 positions so far this season. Hamner, who consistently plays in the No. 1 position, advanced her dual match singles record to 3-2 after Clemson.
  • Hamner and Carnicella continue to represent the Gamecocks in the latest edition of the ITA rankings. In singles, Hamner is No. 21 while Carnicella sits at No. 61. In doubles, the pair ranks 59th.

Scouting the Deacons

  • Wake Forest is 7-2 this season, coming off of a 4-0 sweep over James Madison. Against SEC opponents, the Deacons are 0-1 as they opened the season only narrowly losing 3-4 to Tennessee.
  • Sankavi Gownder leads the team with a solid 7-1 singles record from the No. 6 position, entering Saturday’s match on a four-game winning streak. The duo of Anna Zhang and Whitley Pate are undefeated in doubles from the No. 3 position, with a 6-0 record.
  • Kady Tannenbaum and Nevena Carton are ranked No. 36 in doubles. Krystal Blanch ranks No. 73 in singles with a 3-2 record from the No. 2 position.

Scouting the Catamounts

  • Western Carolina enters the match with a 4-3 record, coming off of a 6-1 win over Presbyterian. Against SEC opponents the Catamounts are 0-2, dropping two matches at the season opener doubleheader to Auburn.
  • Chloe Schwarz is undefeated in singles with a 3-0 record in dual matches. Jade Groen, who consistently plays in the No. 1 and 2 positions, has a 4-2 record.

Series History

  • The Gamecocks lead the series record 15-10 against Wake Forest, facing them on Saturday with a 2-0 win streak. The past two victories have both been scores of 4-3.
  • The matchup against Western Carolina will be the first in program history for the two teams.
