
Gamecocks Open Conference Play at No. 1 Georgia
Athens, GA – The No. 49 South Carolina women’s tennis team opens SEC play against No. 1 Georgia in Athens on Feb. 23 for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
Gamecock Notables:
- The Gamecocks finished non-conference play on Feb. 15 with a two-win weekend against Wake Forest and Western Carolina, increasing their record to 5-3.
- The duo of Olympe Lancelot and Kaitlyn Carnicella took down the No. 59 ranked Wake Forest doubles pair. Lancelot and Carcicella picked up the only doubles win for the Gamecocks against the Demon Deacons, winning 6-1 from the No. 2 position as Wake Forest clinched the first point of the match after picking up victories on the remaining two courts. South Carolina evened out the score to 1-1 following a 7-5, 6-0 win from Helena Buchwald. Misa Malkin defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-to put South Carolina in the lead. Bella Bergkvist Larsson grabbed the third point for the Gamecocks with a 7-5, 6-0 win while Lancelot completed the clinch with a dominant 6-2, 6-3 victory.
- Doubles pair Sarah Hamner and Helena Buchwald, grabbed the first point of second match of the day against Western Carolina with a 6-4 win. The Gamecocks got into the lead thanks to a 6-0, 6-2 win from Carnicella who finished with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Malkin earned her second singles win of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 showing while Jana Stojanova delivered the clinch with a 6-1, 6-3 win to complete the 4-0 shutout victory over Western Carolina.
- Larsson and Malkin are near undefeated in singles play for the dual match season, both with 5-1 records.
- Hamner, Carnicella and Lancelot earned spots in the latest ITA rankings release. Hamner is No. 29 in singles while Carnicella is No. 68. Carnicella and Lancelot earned a No. 52 four doubles following their ranked win over Wake Forest. Carnicella and Hamner are No. 57.
Scouting the Bulldogs:
- The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs took down No. 2 Texas A&M 4-1 on Feb. 11 in the ITA National Indoor Team Championship final to clinch their fifth national indoor team title.
