Gamecocks Conclude Preliminary Rounds at SEC Indoor Championship

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Feb. 28, 2025) – South Carolina Track & Field concluded day two of the 2025 SEC Indoor Championship at the R.A. “Murray” Fasken Indoor Track & Field Complex in College Station, Texas on Friday evening.

It was the DMR that stole the show on Thursday’s opening round, while today’s events featured the Gamecocks flexing their muscles in the 400 meter. In the men’s 400m, Jasauna Dennis and Josiah Wrice ran in the same heat and qualified for the Saturday finale on their respective times. Dennis won the heat with a mark of 46.32, while Wrice boasted one final kick before the line to finish right behind his teammate with a time of 46.33. The duo each ran new indoor personal bests, with Dennis’ mark ranking sixth in South Carolina history and Wrice closing in at seventh.

Zaya Akins set a new indoor lifetime best for herself in the women’s 400m, clocking 51.44 to win the fifth heat. Akins new PR was good enough to rank fourth in South Carolina history, but more importantly she now ranks fifth in the NCAA ahead of the NCAA Indoor Championship declaration day. The sophomore sprinter finished fourth in the preliminary round and will be seeded in the final heat for tomorrow’s 400m championship.

Jaouad Khchina was the final Gamecock to advance out of Friday’s preliminary round, doing so in the men’s mile. Khchina finished second in his heat, crossing the line at 4:04.61 to earn the automatic spot into the finale on Saturday.

South Carolina will compete in 12 total events tomorrow in the final day, including nine finals events on the track.

Heading into the final day of competition, host Texas A&M leads the field in the men’s standings with 40.5 points, just one point ahead of Mississippi (39.5) and three points clear of SEC newcomer Oklahoma (37.5). Meanwhile, the Sooners’ women are atop the standings with 34 points, followed by Arkansas with 32 and Auburn and LSU tied for third with 19 points.

The Gamecocks will conclude the 2025 SEC Indoor Championship tomorrow. The first event of the day for the Gamecocks will be the women’s high jump with Cheyla Scott at 3 p.m. (ET), followed by the men’s shot put at 3:30 p.m. (ET) with Brandon Dennis, CJ Licata and Dylan Targgart. Saturday’s finale will conclude with the men’s 4×400 meter relay at 7:45 p.m. (ET) and the women’s 4×400 meter relay at 8:05 p.m. (ET).
