
Gamecocks Sweep Florida at Home
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team continued conference play on Friday afternoon with a 4-0 sweep over Florida. This win marked the first time that the Gamecocks have defeated the Gators in a regular season match since 2019. With this victory the program moves to a 6-4 overall dual match record and 1-1 conference record.
Olympe Lancelot and Bella Bergkvist Larsson paired up for the first time this season to carry out a commanding 6-1 win and set the tone early for the Garnet & Black. Kaitlyn Carnicella and Sarah Hamner started off strong in the No. 1 position, jumping to a 4-2 lead before the Gators bounced back to tie everything up 4-all. The match remained tight but Florida ultimately pulled out a 7-5 win, leaving the doubles point to be decided at the No. 3 position.
Helena Buchwald and Jana Stojanova overcame a 1-4 deficit, staging an impressive comeback to level the match at 4-4. Florida briefly regained the lead at 5-4, but the Gamecock freshmen claimed the final three games to earn their first SEC win and secure the doubles point with a 7-5 victory.
The Gamecocks carried its momentum into singles play, earning first set wins across five courts. Buchwald advanced South Carolina’s lead to 2-0 with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win from court five. Malkin followed up with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat bringing the Gamecocks within one point of clinching. Bergkvist Larsson sealed the sweep for the Gamecocks with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
The Gamecocks continue conference play at home with No. 6 Auburn, on Sun., March 2 at 1:00 p.m.
