South Carolina falls to Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team had its conference road opener at Kentucky on Sunday afternoon. Despite earning an early lead after clinching the doubles point, the Gamecocks were handed their first SEC loss of the season after falling 2-4 to the Wildcats.

Connor Thomson and Lucas da Silva struck first with a 6-3 win from the No.1 position followed by a 6-4 victory from Casey Hoole and Sean Daryabeigi to ultimately earn the first point of the match and pick up an early lead.

The Wildcats jumped to a 2-1 lead with wins from courts 1 and 2. First, Antoine Ghibaudo defeated Hoole in straight sets of 7-5 and 6-3 at the top of the lineup. Moments later Jaden Weekes defeated da Silva 6-3, 6-4.

Despite winning his first set, Daryabeigi fell to Charlelie Cosnet after the Wildcat completed a three-set comeback, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, which had Kentucky one point within clinching.

Thomson attempted to stage a comeback for the Gamecocks, bringing in the lone singles win for the team after winning in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-4 to close in on the lead. The match was ultimately clinched from the No. 6 position as Matt Rankin defeated Gabe Avram 6-3, 6-2.

The Gamecocks continue SEC play on the road, heading to Vanderbilt on Thurs., March 6 for a 4:30 p.m. (ET) match.
