Tom Mendoza Departs After Seven Seasons, National Search Begins for Next Head Coach
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina volleyball’s Tom Mendoza has accepted a position as head coach at Marquette University, it was announced Sunday evening. Mendoza led the Gamecock program for seven seasons.
“We are very thankful to Coach Mendoza for his service and contributions to our volleyball program. We wish him all the best as he continues his career at Marquette,” South Carolina Director of Athletics Jeremiah Donati said. “We will now begin conducting a national search to identify the best leader to guide our volleyball program.”
Mendoza helped South Carolina reach four NCAA tournaments in his tenure, highlighted by a 20-win season and postseason berth in his first year, 2018, which snapped a 16-year drought for the program. Mendoza earned his 100th win as Gamecock head coach in October of this past season and leaves Carolina ranked third in program history with 106 coaching wins. Outside of his overall wins, Mendoza holds the program record for most wins over ranked opponents (11) and second-most wins over SEC rivals (58).
“I want to thank the University and Gamecocks fans, but most importantly the coaches, staff, and athletes who I’ve worked closely with over the past seven years.” Mendoza said. “Getting to experience them achieve their individual and team goals and develop as people is why we do this job. I am excited for what the current and future Gamecocks will achieve because I know it will be great. I am eternally grateful for my seven years in Columbia.”
Assistant coach Brittany Farrell will assume the day-to-day duties for the spring semester. A national search for a new head coach begins immediately. For continued updates on the team, follow Gamecockvolley on X/Twitter and GamecockVB on Instagram.
