Baseball Hosts Davidson, Visits The Citadel in the Midweek

FOR STARTERS

  • Carolina will play its final double midweek of the season as the Gamecocks host Davidson and travel to The Citadel.
  • The Gamecocks and Wildcats play on Tuesday night (March 4) at 6:30 p.m. at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.
  • Carolina and The Citadel play Wednesday night (March 5) at 7 p.m. at Joe Riley Park in Charleston.
  • Tuesday’s game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus while Wednesday’s contest is streamed on ESPN+.
  • Both games also will be on the Gamecock Sports Network presented by Learfield with Cade Crenshaw and Stuart Lake on the call.

SCOUTING DAVIDSON

  • The Wildcats took 2-of-3 games in a series against Lafayette this past weekend.
  • Jamie Daly had three hits and two runs scored in Sunday’s 9-1 win over the Leopards.
  • Daly has 15 hits (.455 average) and a team-best 11 RBI in 10 games. He also has three home runs on the year.
  • On the mound, Isaac Fix has a 2.35 ERA and eight strikeouts in 15.1 innings pitched.
  • Davidson will start Jacob Vokal on Tuesday. He has a 2.35 ERA and a .214 opponent’s batting average.
  • Rucker Taylor is in his seventh season as head coach at Davidson. He was the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2022.

SERIES VS. DAVIDSON

  • Carolina has a 50-22-1 series advantage on Davidson heading into Tuesday’s game.
  • Last season, Carolina won a rain-shortened 4-1 game in six innings. Tyler Pitzer struck out five and Dylan Brewer had two hits in the win. 

SCOUTING THE CITADEL

  • The Bulldogs are coming off a three-game sweep of Yale in Charleston this past weekend.
  • Garrett Dill had two hits and two RBI in Sunday’s 6-2 win.
  • Phillips Daniels leads The Citadel with a .400 batting average while Matthew Lively had a team-best two home runs.
  • On the mound, The Citadel has a team 3.49 ERA. Will Holmes has 16 strikeouts in a 0.56 ERA in three starts.
  • Russell Triplett is in his first season as head coach at The Citadel. He was the head coach at Newberry for 14 seasons.

SERIES VS. THE CITADEL

  • Carolina has a 143-50-1 series lead on The Citadel heading into Wednesday’s game.
  • Last season, Carolina won both meetings, taking a 7-1 decision in Columbia and winning 4-3 in Charleston.
  • In the game at The Citadel, Will Tippett had two hits and a home run and Parker Marlatt struck out three in 1.1 innings to earn the win.

  • Jake McCoy struck out 12 batters in six innings of work against Clemson on March 1. McCoy was named the Tom Price Award winner, handed out to the MVP of the Clemson series.
  • Dylan Eskew allowed just one run on three hits in six innings on Sunday against the Tigers. Eskew now has a 2.08 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched.
  • Brandon Stone came in relief on Friday and pitched 4.2 innings, striking out six and allowing just one run on three hits.
  • Carolina pitching struck out 37 batters in the Clemson series.

  • Carolina hosts Morehead State in the final non-conference series in the regular season.
  • The Gamecocks and Eagles start the series on Friday night (March 7) at 7 p.m. The series continues Saturday, March 8 at 4 p.m. and concludes Sunday, March 9 at 1:30 p.m.
