
Baseball Uses Big Sixth Frame to Defeat Davidson
COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 7-3 win over Davidson Tuesday night (March 4) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.
Davidson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second on Jack Cotrone’s 3-run home run. Carolina got one back on Henry Kaczmar’s first home run of the season. The score remained 3-1 until the sixth. Nathan Hall’s 2-run single to left gave Carolina the 4-3 lead. An Ethan Petry double and a Jase Woita sacrifice fly made it 6-3. A Woita hit by pitch in the seventh ended the scoring.
Kaczmar was a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI while Woita and Hall added a pair of RBI. Gavin Braland scored a pair of runs.
Tyler Pitzer earned the win on the mound, striking out a pair to end the top of the sixth. Ryder Garino earned the start. He allowed two earned runs with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings. Jackson Soucie struck out three in 2.1 innings and the combination of Brandon Stone and Caleb Jones had six strikeouts in the final three frames.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Caleb Jones made his first appearance as a Gamecock in the ninth inning, striking out a pair.
- Hall and Petry each have 12 RBI on the season.
- Stone lowered his ERA to 1.38.
- Petry now has a hit in 12 of the team’s 13 games.
