
Baseball Hosts Morehead State This Weekend
FOR STARTERS
- Carolina starts a seven-game homestand this weekend with a three-game series against Morehead State.
- The Gamecocks and Eagles open the series on Friday night (March 7) at 7 p.m. at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.
- The series continues Saturday, March 8 at 4 p.m. and concludes Sunday, March 9 at 1:30 p.m.
- All three games will be streamed on SEC Network Plus.
- All three games also will be on the Gamecock Sports Network presented by Learfield with Derek Scott, Cade Crenshaw and Stuart Lake on the call.

SCOUTING MOREHEAD STATE
- The Eagles fell to Louisville, 9-8, in 10 innings on Tuesday night. Alex Kean and Hunter Thomas had three hits apiece.
- Morehead State took 2-of-3 games from Quinnipiac this past weekend, including a 22-21 win on Friday.
- Thomas is having a monster year so far, as he has seven home runs and 25 RBI in just 11 games.
- On the mound, Kamden Hawks has a 1.59 ERA and a .189 opponent’s batting average in three starts.
- Chris Rose is in his first season as head coach at Morehead State. He was an assistant at MSU for three seasons.
SERIES VS. MOREHEAD STATE
- Carolina and Morehead State will meet for the third time in program history on Friday.
- Carolina won the previous two meetings, both occurring in the 1994 season. The Gamecocks won 13-4 on March 19 and 7-6 in 10 innings on March 20.
- Carolina has also faced OVC member SIU-Edwardsville in both 1977 and 1978, winning all three meetings.
PITCHING STANDS OUT IN OPENING STRETCH
- The South Carolina pitching staff holds a 2.92 ERA with 163 strikeouts in 120 innings pitched after 14 games this season.
- Eight different Gamecocks have a win on the mound while Carolina has four saves in 13 games in 2025.
- Jake McCoy struck out 12 batters in six innings of work against Clemson on March 1. McCoy was named the Tom Price Award winner, handed out to the MVP of the Clemson series.
- Dylan Eskew allowed just one run on three hits in six innings on Sunday against the Tigers. Eskew now has a 2.08 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched.
- Brandon Stone came in relief on Friday and pitched 4.2 innings, striking out six and allowing just one run on three hits.
- Jarvis Evans threw a team-best seven innings, striking out six batters in a 9-1 win over The Citadel.
BEAU KNOWS
- Freshman Beau Hollins has played in six of Carolina’s 14 games this season and has seven hits (.438 batting average), a double and two RBI.
- Hollins had three hits in the 9-1 win over The Citadel on March 5. He reached base four times in the win.
- Hollins has had hits in five of the six games he has appeared in.
EVAN GOES YARD
- Evan Stone belted his first home run of 2025 and his fourth of his Carolina career in a 9-1 win over The Citadel on March 5.
- Stone had two hits on the night and reached base three times, scoring on all three chances.
- Stone hit his first home run since May 9, 2023, against UNF.
PETRY SHOOTS UP CAREER HOME RUN LIST
- Junior Ethan Petry will enter the Morehead State series with 48 home runs at Carolina, which has him in a tie for second place on the all-time home run list.
- The Land O’ Lakes, Fla., native had 23 home runs in his freshman season in 2023, then followed that up with 21 his sophomore season.
- Petry has been named to the preseason All-America second team by both D1 Baseball and Perfect Game, the third team by the NCBWA, was named to the Preseason All-SEC first team and is on the Golden Spikes Award Watch List.
- Last season, Petry hit .306 with 21 home runs and 53 RBI while leading the team with 51 walks. He was named to the All-Raleigh Regional team.
- Petry needs one more home run to move into second place by himself. He is 14 home runs away from tying Justin Smoak (2006-08) for the all-time mark.
- Petry had a two-run home run in the win over The Ciradel on March 5.
- The junior is hitting .420 with six doubles, a triple, four home runs and leads the team with 15 RBI.
SEC LEADERS
- Carolina currently is third in the SEC in earned-run average at 2.92.
- Jake McCoy leads the league with a .102 opponent’s batting average.
- McCoy is second with 29 strikeouts, just behind Liam Doyle of Tennessee with 34.
- Brendan Sweeney is tied for the SEC lead with three saves.
- Carolina is seventh in the SEC with a .977 fielding percentage.
- Ethan Petry is in the top 10 in many offensive categories.
- Petry is tied for sixth with 21 hits, tied for third with six doubles, is fifth with 41 total bases and is ninth with a .820 slugging percentage.
