Gamecocks Split First Day in Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, FLA. – The Gamecock beach volleyball team split their two duals Friday at FGCU, losing to No. 19 North Florida, 5-0, in the morning before rallying back to beat the host Eagles (4-4), 3-2, in the afternoon. South Carolina’s record stands a 5-2 with two Saturday duals to come.

In the morning, the team came out on the wrong side of three-set matches on courts two, three and five en route to a 5-0 loss to the Osprey. Karlyn Dyal and Kristen Schenck made their season debut together on court five and won their first set, 21-19, but UNF rallied back to win 21-17, 15-13 from there and pushed ahead 2-0 in the team score after the first wave. The Gamecocks let a first-set win slip on court two as well, losing 18-21, 22-20, 15-11, and Sadie Nelson and Abigail Lagemann’s comeback hopes on court three also came up short, 21-13, 19-21, 15-10.

Against FGCU, Carolina split the first wave of matches. Evie Ziffer and VB Trost opened the dual with a 21-19, 21-13 sweep on court four, but the Eagles scratched out a 22-20, 19-21, 15-13 win on court five to even the score. Julia Waugh and Riley Whitesides earned their first win of the season in the first pairing, a commanding 21-16, 21-17 win, but the final two courts would go to third sets. Lagemann and Nelson clinched the team victory with a 21-17, 13-21, 16-14 decision on court three for the 3-1 margin.

UP NEXT
Saturday pits the Gamecocks against #14 FIU and #20 Stetson. The Hatters (8-2) had the best day of any team in the tournament, defeating FIU and North Florida. FIU lost to FGCU along with the loss to Stetson on day one. First serve with FIU is scheduled for 8 a.m. and the Gamecocks wrap up with Stetson at noon.
