
Early Runs Give Baseball a Series Win over Morehead State
COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team put up 12 runs in the first three innings on its way to a 16-11 win over Morehead State on Saturday afternoon (March 9) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park. The Gamecocks clinched the series win with today’s victory.
Carolina scored five runs in the second on Henry Kaczmar’s single to right and Evan Stone’s grand slam. Then then erupted for seven runs in the third. KJ Scobey hit his second home run and Jordan Carrion’s double brought in a run. The Gamecocks sent 13 men to the plate in the third.
Morehead State scored fourth in the fourth, but the Gamecocks answered with two in the bottom of the frame. The Eagles then plated three in each of the next two innings. Carolina added insurance with single runs in the seventh and eighth on run-scoring hits from Beau Hollins and Cayden Gaskin. Zach Russell and Parker Marlatt threw up zeroes in the last three innings to clinch the win.
At the plate, Carrion was 3-for-5 with three runs scored while Stone drove in four runs. Scobey had three RBI and Hollins added two hits.
Russell earned the win, pitching 1.1 innings of hitless relief. Marlatt struck out three in the final two frames. Jake McCoy got the start, striking out nine and allowing six hits and five runs in four frames.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Gaskin picked up his first career hit with the RBI single in the eighth.
- Stone now has five career home runs, two this week. It also was his first career grand slam.
- Carrion now had eight runs scored, two doubles and four RBI this season.
- Carolina walked nine times and was hit by three pitches in the win.
