Fulwiley a Finalist for The Dawn Staley Award
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball sophomore MiLaysia Fulwiley is one of four finalists for The Dawn Staley Award, the Phoenix. Club of Philadelphia announced today. The award recognizes the NCAA Div. I women’s basketball player who exemplifies the skills that Staley possessed throughout her career – ball-handling, scoring, ability to distribute the basketball and the will to win.
Fulwiley was named SEC Sixth Woman of the Year and to the All-SEC Second Team by league coaches earlier this month, which she followed with a strong showing that landed her on the SEC Tournament All-Tournament Team after the Gamecocks claimed their third-straight title at the event. The Columbia, S.C., native is second on the team in scoring at 12.0 points per game, including a 13.4 scoring average in SEC regular-season games. She has scored in double figured in 11 of her last 13 games, including a career-high 24 points at Vanderbilt. She has been the team’s top scorer in seven games.
Fulwiley’s impact on the Gamecocks’ success ramped up in SEC play as she embraced a defensive effort that ranked her 10th in the league in blocks per conference game as the top shot-blocking guard in the league and ninth in steals per SEC outing. She has eight games of at least three steals, including five against top-15 opponents.
No. 2/2 South Carolina awaits its seeding and first opponent for the 2025 NCAA Tournament, which will be announced on Sun., Mar. 16, at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
