Gamecocks Come up Short Against No. 14 Texas in Second Round of SEC Tournament

AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 23 South Carolina women’s tennis team faced No. 14 Texas in the second round of the SEC Tournament on Thursday evening in Auburn, falling 4-2 to the Longhorns following a tough battle.

The Gamecocks set the tone early, taking an early edge after clinching the doubles point. Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald cruised to a 6-1 win first before No. 16 Sarah Hamner and Kaitlyn Carnicella were able to secure the first point of the match following a 6-4 win. The victory marked Hamner and Carnicella’s 11th win as a duo of the season.

The Longhorns leveled out the match from court 6 in singles as Vivian Ovrootsky defeated Friedman 6-1, 6-1. Texas continued to build on their momentum, extending its lead to 2-1 with a 6-1, 7-5 win from No. 37 Carmen Herea over No. 55 Carnicella. The Gamecock put up a fight during the second set as she led by 5-3 initially, but was unable to follow through.

Next, No. 61 Eszter Meri topped Olympe Lancelot 6-2, 6-1 which got Texas one point away from victory. Senior Misa Malkin kept the Gamecocks within striking distance, winning 6-2, 7-5 from the No. 3 position to cut the deficit back to one.

It all came down to Hamner and Larsson who were both in third sets. Larsson kept her set leveled throughout the first four games before her opponent was able to pull away and ultimately clinch the match for the Longhorns at 4-2.

The Gamecocks will find out their post season plans during the NCAA Selection Show on April 28.
