Gamecocks Finish Runner-Up at Charlotte Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 26, 2025) – South Carolina Track & Field capped off a pair of runner-up finishes at the Charlotte Invitational on Saturday in the first scored meet of the outdoor season. The women’s team finished with 156 points, while the men concluded the weekend with 127.5 points.

In closing action on Saturday, the women took part in 11 events and came away with five wins overall. Four of the five wins by the women were individual wins with Cynteria James and JaMeesia Ford winning a pair of sprinter events. James captured the women’s 100-meter crown after crossing the finish line in 11.31 (0.3), while Ford clocked 51.09 to capture the title in the 400 meter dash.

Joslyn Hamilton excelled in the hurdles on Saturday afternoon, running a pair of personal bests in both the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. The freshman hurdler won the 400mH after running 59.34. Meanwhile in the 100mH, Hamilton stopped the clock in 13.13 (1.5) to finish runner-up and post the ninth fastest time in Gamecock history. Additionally, her 100mH time now sits 11th in the East Region. The final individual win for the Gamecock women came from Cheyla Scott in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.82m (5-11.5) to tie for the third best high jump in program history as she now sits fourth overall in the region.

The women’s 4×400 meter relay team of Zaya Akins, Cynteria James, Jayla Jamison and Joslyn Hamilton closed the meet with a convincing win in the coveted relay event. The quartet clocked 3:35.38 for the overall win, recording the second fastest time this season by the Gamecocks.

The men’s team took part in 11 events on the final day, coming away with three wins on the board. Theo Mudzengerere was the lone individual to win on Saturday, doing so in the men’s triple jump after jumping a season-best distance of 16.07m (52-8.75). Mudzengerere’s jump now ranks third overall in the East Region.

South Carolina’s men swept the relays on Saturday, opening the meet with a win in the 4x100m relay. The quartet of Antwan Hughes Jr., Josiah Wrice, Devan Crumpton and Anthony Greenhow posted a time of 39.88 for the gold medal and 10 points. Three of the four runners in the 4x100m turned around to close the meet in the 4x400m relay as Crumpton, Greenhow and Wrice paired up with Josue Richardson Salazar to win the final event of the day with a time of 3:06.48. The quartet’s time in the Charlotte Invitational 4x400m relay is the third fastest relay time for the Gamecocks this season.

The Gamecocks will conclude the 2025 outdoor regular season next week as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to compete in the East Coast Relays at University of North Florida beginning on Friday, May 2. The East Coast Relays will also serve as the host site for the NCAA East Regional at the end of May.
