Baseball Bests Charleston Southern, 5-3

COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh innings and received quality starting pitching from Jarvis Evans Jr., in a 5-3 win over Charleston Southern Tuesday night (April 29) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.

The Gamecocks struck first in the bottom of the second as Beau Hollins scored on a wild pitch. The score remained at 1-0 until the seventh. Gavin Braland led off the inning with a single to left. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Carolina loaded the bases on a Henry Kaczmar hit by pitch and a KJ Scobey walk. Kennedy Jones walked to bring in a run and Evan Stone singled up the middle to plate two. Pinch runner Blake Jackson scored the inning’s final run on a failed pickoff.

Charleston Southern put up two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, but Brendan Sweeney got a flyout to end it, picking up his sixth save of the season.

Evans pitched 5.2 innings, allowing just two hits with no runs, three walks and a strikeout. Caleb Jones and Ryder Garino both got the Gamecocks to the dugout with traffic on the base. Jones got a fielder’s choice to end the sixth and Garino had a strikeout and flyout to end the eighth.

Kaczmar had two hits to lead Carolina’s offense while Stone drove in two.
