Gamecocks Sweep VCU to Advance in NCAA Tournament

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 13 South Carolina men’s tennis team advanced to the round of 32 in the 2025 NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon with a 4-0 win over VCU. The Gamecocks earned the doubles point and kept that momentum through to singles play to complete the sweep. 

The duo of No. 3 Connor Thomson and Lucas da Silva gave South Carolina an early advantage when they took a dominant 6-2 win from the first position, moving them to 11-5 on the season.  The Gamecocks clinched the doubles point thanks to a 6-4 win from Sean Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer playing in the third position. 

Moving on to singles matches, South Carolina continued to dominate. The Gamecocks put up a first set win on each court – Thomson (6-3), da Silva (6-2), Daryabeigi (6-4), Atakan Karahan (6-1), Jelani Sarr (6-4) and Gabe Avram (6-4).

Karahan struck first, extending the lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Thomson got the Gamecocks within one point of clinching the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win on court one for his 13th win of the season. Da Silva sealed the 4-0 sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 victory from the No. 2 position.

The Gamecocks host the next round of the tournament against No. 20 Florida State tomorrow, Sat. May 3rd at 10 a.m. at the Carolina Tennis Center.
