
Gamecocks Conclude Season After Falling to UNC
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team concluded its 2024-25 season on the road Saturday evening, taking on No. 5 North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Garnet & Black suffered a tough 4-0 loss at the Chewning Tennis Center, despite multiple Gamecocks forcing third sets in singles.
In doubles, UNC struck first on court 3, where the duo of Tatum Evans and Theadora Rabman defeated Helena Buchwald and Lauren Friedman, 6-3. At the top of the lineup, the Tarheels jumped to a 3-0 lead before No. 10 Sarah Hamner and Kaitlyn Carnicella were able to narrow the deficit by one game. No. 2 Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton then took off, ultimately winning the match 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.
On court 2, Susanna Maltby and Carson Tanguilig (No. 16) were narrowly leading the Bella Bergqvist Larsson and Olympe Lancelot, 5-4, when play was halted due to the clinch.
In singles action, the Tar Heels kept the momentum rolling. On court 4, Hamilton advanced the score to 2-0 after defeating Misa Malkin 6-0, 6-0. The Tar Heels then added a win on court 3, where Theadora Rabman defeated Lancelot in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Claire Hill sealed the team victory for UNC on court 6, outlasting Buchwald 7-5, 6-3 to complete the 4-0 sweep.
Three matches went unfinished but were shaping up to be competitive battles as they were all in third sets. On court 1, a top-15 showdown between No. 3 Reese Brantmeier and No. 15 Hamner was locked in a decider, with Brantmeier leading 5-3 after splitting the first two sets. On court 2, No. 63 Tatum Evans and No. 47 Carnicella had exchanged sets and Evans led 2-0 in the final frame. On court 5, No. 43 Carson Tanguilig was up 2-1 in the third set against Larsson after a closely contested second-set tiebreak.
