No. 20 Gamecocks Advance to NCAA Championship for First Time Since 2019

South Carolina finished fifth at the NCAA Bremerton Regional led by redshirt junior Frankie Harris, who finished T-2nd at 11-under for the tournament

BREMERTON, Wash. – No. 20 South Carolina punched its ticket to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2019 by a shot over No. 17 Utah, finishing fifth at the NCAA Bremerton Regional on Wednesday. The Gamecocks shot 864 (E) over 54-holes, rising up the leaderboard in round two with a 7-under 281 on Tuesday.

Redshirt junior Frankie Harris played lights out golf as he finished T-2nd with Matthew Cress of Florida. He shot 205 (-11) with scores of 72-66-67 to lead Carolina this week. His 17 birdies led the team and T-2nd in the field.  The Boca Raton, Fla. native was bogey free today with a trio of clutch birdies on the back nine at holes 13, 14 and 16. Harris was bogey free his final 31 holes of the tournament, making 11 circles on his scorecard.

Senior All-American Nathan Franks, who got into the Seattle area early Monday morning after making the cut in his PGA TOUR debut at the ONEFlight Myrtle Beach Classic over the weekend, finished T-24th at 2-over for the tournament. He shot 71 (-1) in the final round with three birdies and an eagle at the par-5 sixth hole.

Redshirt freshman Ismael Encinas had a solid tournament for Carolina, finishing T-33rd at 7-over. He shot 69 (-3) in round two with four birdies and a chip-in eagle. Junior Zach Adams finished T-43rd at 6-over and sophomore transfer Brock Blais finished T-52nd at 9-over.

The last time the Gamecocks made the NCAA Championship in 2019 was also on the west coast at the NCAA Pullman Regional. The team got through the same site in Bremerton as the top seed back in 2015 finishing second in the 14-team field. The All-American duo of Matt NeSmith and Will Starke finished in the top-10 to lead South Carolina at Gold Mountain Golf Club.

The Gamecocks will make the program’s 22nd all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship next week at Omni La Costa. First round action gets underway Friday, May 23, two days after the women’s National Championship match. It’s been a successful first season under first-year head coach Rob Bradley as he’s led his team to a top-20 ranking most of the season thanks to now nine top-five finishes in the team’s 11 tournaments.
