No. 3 Gamecocks Finish T-10th at NCAA Championship
South Carolina Athletics
Fourth top-10 finish under head coach Kalen Anderson ; Galitsky finishes T-5th to match best individual finish by a Gamecock at NCAA finals in program history
CARLSBAD, Calif. – It was a tough end to an incredible season on Monday as No. 3 South Carolina finished T-10th at the NCAA Championship, two shots shy of punching the team’s ticket to the match play quarterfinals on Tuesday morning. The Gamecocks shot 9-over (297) in the final round led by a bogey free 68 (-4) from standout freshman Eila Galitsky.
Galitsky made a flurry of birdies late putting circles on her scorecard at holes six, seven and nine (team started on hole 10 today). The Chaing Mai, Thailand native logged a 72-hole total of 282 (-6) to finish T-5th and earn NCAA All-America distinction (top-15 individual finish). She becomes the second player in program history and the first freshman to earn a top-five finish at the NCAA Championship. Former All-American Katie Burnett finished 5th at the 2012 NCAA Championship at Vanderbilt Legends Club.
The SEC Co-Freshman of the Year has enjoyed a standout spring after enrolling in January. She had four top-five finishes in six stroke play starts including a win at the Moon Golf Invitational back in mid-February. She is one of four finalist for the WGCA National Freshman of the Year. Her scoring average of 71.26 is the lowest in program history by any first-year player.
Senior All-Americans Louise Rydqvist and Hannah Darling each shot 76 (+4) today in round four. Rydqvist, who was 1-under on the day with three holes to play, caught a brutal break late at the par-4 seventh hole as her tee shot got stuck in a tree. The duo finishes their careers as two of the most decorated players in program history and likely four-time All-Americans. Darling finishes her career with the lowest scoring average in program history at 72.09. Rydqvist finishes her career with the third-lowest scoring average in program history at 72.68.
Graduate Sophia Burnett, a key stalwart in the lineup all season for Carolina after being in-and-out of the lineup last season, was the final counting score today for the Gamecocks with a 77 (+5). Sophomore Maylis Lamoure also shot 77 (+5). She was 1-under thru 11 holes but was hurt by a slew of bogeys coming into the clubhouse.
The top-10 finish is the sixth in program history at the NCAA Championship. Four of those top-10 finishes have come under head coach Kalen Anderson.
