Gamecocks Conclude Weather-Lengthened First Day of East Regionals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 29, 2025) – South Carolina Track & Field had to endure a lengthy five-hour weather delay, but the wait did not stall the Gamecock men’s team as they accounted for one ticket punched and four advancements in day one of the NCAA East Regionals in Jacksonville, Fla.

Channing Ferguson was the first South Carolina athlete of the regional meet to punch a ticket to Eugene for the NCAA Championship, doing so in the men’s long jump. The three-time outdoor All-American returns to the national stage in the long jump after jumping 7.47m (24-6.25m) for the final qualifying spot. Ferguson will also compete in the high jump on Friday for the chance to record a pair of All-American honors for the second consecutive season.

David Warmington was the first Gamecock to set the tone after the delay, advancing to the 110-meter hurdle quarterfinals on Friday after clocking 13.97 (-0.8) to place 23rd overall for an at-large spot. He was then followed by Jaouad Khchina in the 1500m as the Morocco native finished runner-up in the third heat with a time of 3:44.02 to earn the automatic qualifying spot into Friday’s quarterfinals.

Josiah Wrice continued to shine in the men’s 400m, running 45.91 to win the second heat and earn an automatic qualifying spot into Friday’s quarterfinals. Jasauna Dennis was right on Wrice’s heels on the leaderboard, running out of heat six. The Jamaica native finished runner-up with a new personal best time of 45.92 and now sits eighth all-time in Gamecock history for the outdoor 400m.

The Gamecocks will be back in action later this afternoon with the women opening their involvement in the NCAA East Regional. The first event for the Gamecock women will be the 100-meter hurdles at 2:30 p.m. The men’s shot put that was scheduled for Wednesday will now take place today at 12:30 p.m.
