Gamecocks Send Three into ITA Qualifying Rounds

CARY, N.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis saw three of its four entries in the ITA All-American Championships prequalifying rounds advance to qualifying play. Freshman Daniela Piani advanced in both singles and doubles.

In singles action, Piani needed a tiebreak to get ahead of UC Santa Barbara’s Ekua Youri. After the Gamecock newcomer dominated that 7-6 (1), she cruised to a 6-3 second-set win to move onto qualifying action on Monday.

Two Gamecock doubles teams are into the qualifying rounds after decisive victories on Sunday. Kaitlyn Carnicells and Piani topped Ashle Narker and Julia Camblor of Iowa State 6-1, 6-4. Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald needed just two more games to advance to qualifying, defeating Old Dominion duo Kira Matushkina and Lidiia Rasskouskaia 6-3, 6-4.

Qualifying rounds are set for Monday and Tuesday with the main draw, which includer Carnicella in singles, begins on Wednesday.
