Gamecocks Post 1-1 Draw against ODU
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina men’s soccer played to a 1-1 draw with Old Dominion Friday night at Stone Stadium, moving the Gamecocks to 7-4-2 on the season and 1-1-2 in Sun Belt Conference play.
All the action came in the first half with the teams combining for just one shot on goal in the second half.
The Monarchs got on the board first in the 25th minute when Teagan Dunne sent a long service into the box for a Lewis Rourke header.
South Carolina netted the equalizer quickly off a corner in the 28th minute. Alexander Stjernegaard stepped to the corner flag and sent a hard ball across the face of the goal. ODU keeper Michael Statham couldn’t connect to punch it away as it slipped by him into the net.
Five minutes later, a service from the right side found the foot of Miguel Menendez. He one-timed it toward the net, but Carolina keeper Filip Versterre sailed across the goal for the save to keep the match level going into the break.
The Gamecocks dominated possession in the second half, but the Monarchs got the better of shots in the final 45 minutes (5-2), just one of which required a save from Versterre.
“It was a good night for our seniors, to celebrate them and see them off with a good, competitive game against a good team,” South Carolina head coach Tony Annan said. “I’m pleased for them and the work they’ve done this season. Hopefully they will move on into greater things once they leave USC.”
South Carolina is back in action at Kentucky at 3 p.m. on Sun., Oct. 19.
