The new-look Carolina squad features 12 players not on last year’s team with six transfers headlined by the return of All-SEC guard Meechie Johnson. The Cleveland, Ohio native donned the Garnet and Black for two seasons from 2022-24. In 63 career games (62 starts) at South Carolina, Johnson averaged 13.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. He had the best season of his college career in 2023-24, leading the Gamecocks in scoring, averaging 14.1 points to go alongside 4.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. Carolina went 26-8 that season, tying the school record for wins in its return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017. Lamont Paris, who enters his fourth season leading the program, was tabbed 2024 SEC Coach of the Year for the team’s historic 15-win turnaround.
Graduate guard Myles Stute headlines the trio of returners for the Gamecocks this season. He was granted in extra year of eligibility by the NCAA after missing 17 of the team’s 18 SEC games last year due to injury. Of the 71 returning players across the league with SEC experience, Stute has played in the most SEC games (65) and logged the most SEC minutes (1,800), bringing a wealth of valuable experience to the table. He’s made 236 career 3s and boast a career 3-point field goal percentage of 37.5 (236-of-629) in four-and-a-half seasons of college basketball.
The Gamecocks’ roster also features a deep and talented five-man freshmen class led by highly touted guard Eli Ellis. The Hickory, N.C. native was a two-time Overtime Elite MVP for YNG Dreamerz. In 2024-25, Ellis helped lead his team to the OTE Championship after averaging 32.1 points, 6.7 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. He was teammates in the OTE with fellow Carolina freshman Hayden Assemian and Abu Yarmah.
NC State also revamped its roster under first-year head coach Will Wade with the addition of nine transfers this offseason headlined by Preseason ACC Player of the Year Darrion Williams. He averaged 15.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game in helping Texas Tech to the Elite Eight last season. Wade served as the head coach of LSU (2017-22) for five seasons and most recently was at McNeese State (2023-25) where he led the Cowboys to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
