Verzyl and Riordan Earn SEC Weekly Accolades
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina standouts Sophie Verzyl and Amy Riordan earned SEC weekly awards, the league announced Tuesday.
The two seniors played a key role in leading the No. 17 Gamecock women to a 176-124 victory over the No. 14 Tar Heels, the program’s first since 1985.
Sophie Verzyl picks up her second SEC Diver of the Week honor of the season, 11th of her career. The Columbia, S.C. native swept both diving events for the third time this season after earning a 342.75 (1-meter) and a 347.03 (3-meter).
Riordan grabbed her first conference award of the season as she was named Women’s Swimmer of the Week.
Riordan’s performance against the Tar Heels was highlighted by setting a new pool record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.28, which also earned her the event win. She claimed the 100 backstroke victory with a time of 52.04. Riordan was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team, who recorded a time of 1:38.06 (24.69/split).
The Gamecocks are set to host the 2025 Gamecock Invitational from Nov. 18-21 inside Carolina Natatorium. Members of the diving team will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Tennessee Invitational during this time.
