Edwards Named All-American by The Athletic
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball sophomore Joyce Edwards earned a spot on The Athletic All-America Second Team, the media outlet announced this morning. The Gamecocks’ leading scorer becomes just the eighth Gamecock sophomore all-time to earn All-America status, most recently joining Aliyah Boston (2021), A’ja Wilson (2016) and Tiffany Mitchell (2014).
Edwards is a two-time All-SEC First-Team selection after leading South Carolina in scoring each of the last two seasons, becoming just the ninth Gamecock to claim First-Team All-SEC honors in multiple seasons and just the third to do it in her first two seasons in Columbia. The forward is among the nation’s best offensive players, ranking 20th in scoring at 19.8 points per game and 17th in field goal percentage at .590. Her 18 20-point games rank fifth in program single-season history and include a program-record tying nine in SEC play. Beyond scoring, Edwards stuffed the stat sheet for the Gamecocks with her 6.3 rebounds per game coming in 18th in the SEC, her 2.7 offensive boards per game ranking 15th, and both her 1.1 blocks and 1.8 steals per game slotting in as 12th-best in the conference.
No. 3/3 South Carolina is in Greenville, S.C., for the SEC Tournament this week. The Gamecocks drew the No. 1 seed at the event for the fifth straight season and will open play in the quarterfinals on Fri., March 6, at noon on ESPN against the winner of today’s game between eighth-seeded Georgia and ninth-seeded Kentucky.
