Men’s Tennis Falls to Ole Miss
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 14 South Carolina men’s tennis team (10-5, 3-4 SEC) fell 5-2 to No. 23 Ole Miss (15-4, 3-4 SEC) on Sunday afternoon at the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center. The Gamecocks dropped the doubles point and came up short in three set battles on courts one and five.
The Gamecocks dropped the first games across all three courts to open doubles play. Lucas da Silva and Paul Barbier Gazeu fell to a 4-1 deficit from the top of the lineup, while Sean Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer managed to level things at 2-2. Cole Henceroth and Charlie Swaine traded sets from the third position for their first time competing as a pair. Daryabeigi and Stenzer fell 6-3 to Ole Miss’ Stefano D’Agostino and Pietro Pampanin to give the Rebels an edge. Da Silva and Barbier steadily mounted a comeback and won three straight sets to tie their score at 4-4 but the pair were unable to finish as Henceroth and Swaine dropped their match 6-4 to give Ole Miss the doubles point.
Singles play started off split as South Carolina saw first set wins from Gazeu (6-3), Gabe Avram (6-4) and Daryabiegi (7-5). Karahan fell in straight sets on court four to give Ole Miss a 2-0 lead. The Gamecocks got on the board when Gazeu defeated Pietro Pampanin 6-3, 6-2 from the third spot in the lineup. The Rebels came within one point of clinching the win on court six when Swaine fell to Loan Lestir.
Da Silva, who dropped his first set 5-7, earned a second set 7-5 win to force a third. Avram dropped his second set, and entered a third-set tie-break as well. Meanwhile, Daryabeigi was still battling in his second set. He defeated Matthieu Chambonniere 7-3 in the break to take the match 7-5, 7-6 and advance the score to 3-2. Avram fell in his third set, allowing Ole Miss to clinch the victory on court five. The match ended with Da Silva dropping his third set 6-3, providing the Rebels with their fifth point.
The Gamecocks round out their four-match home stretch on Friday, March 20, against Kentucky at 5:00 p.m.
