Baseball Falls to No. 4 Arkansas in Extra Innings
COLUMBIA – No. 4 Arkansas scored a run in the top of the 10th inning on a groundout in a 3-2 win over the University of South Carolina baseball team on Saturday afternoon (March 21) at Founders Park.
Amp Phillips was solid on the mound, allowing just one run on three hits with six strikeouts in seven innings of work. The only run he allowed was a Damian Ruiz home run in the third.
Carolina tied the game in the fifth on Beau Hollins’ RBI single. Then Tyler Bak’s single in the seventh gave the Gamecocks the 2-1 lead. With two outs in the top of the ninth, a throwing error allowed the tying run to score for the Razorbacks.
In the 10th, Arkansas’ TJ Pompey led off with a double. He scored on a groundout to second base.
Hollins went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Gamecock offense. Alex Valentin took the loss, allowing one earned run with four strikeouts and two hits in three innings of relief.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Hollins had a season high in hits in the contest.
- Both teams left seven runners on base.
- Phillips lowered his ERA to 2.32 after his outing.
