No. 24 Women's Tennis Drops Match Against No. 17 Florida
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 24 South Carolina fell to No. 17 Florida, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Carolina Tennis Center.
The Gators secured the doubles point, taking wins on courts one and two. Florida’s pair of Nikola Daubnerova and Xinyi Nong defeated the Gamecocks’ No. 9-ranked duo of Helena Buchwald and Lauren Friedman 6-1 on court one, before Valery Gynina and Brooke Black clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Kaitlyn Carnicella and Taylor Goetz on court two.
Despite Florida grabbing the first singles win from court four, South Carolina responded with a strong performance from Jana Stojanova on court six. She defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-3 to put the Gamecocks on the board.
Sara Borkop battled on court three but fell 6-2, 6-4, while Jane Dunyon forced a third set before dropping a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 decision on court five. Ultimately, the Gators secured the match with victories on courts three and five.
Two matches went unfinished when the match was decided. Kaitlyn Carnicella held a 7-6 (11-9), 3-2 lead over India Houghton on court one, while Helena Buchwald was in a tight battle with Valery Gynina on court two after splitting the first two sets.
