Baseball Falls to No. 7 Georgia in Series Finale

ATHENS – No. 7 Georgia broke a 7-7 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th in a 9-7 win over the University of South Carolina baseball team Sunday afternoon (March 29) at Foley Field.

The Gamecocks put up a pair of runs in the top of the first. After a four-pitch walk to Patrick Evans, Luke Yuhasz doubled to put runners on second and third. Jake Randolph singled to right to plate Evans and KJ Scobey brought in Yuhasz with a sacrifice fly. Georgia tied the game at two in the bottom of the first on a double play and an RBI infield single.

Beau Hollins doubled in Will Craddock in the top of the second to give Carolina a 3-2 lead. Patrick Evans then hit his fourth home run of the season to give the Gamecocks a two-run advantage.

In the top of the fourth, Talmadge LeCroy brought in Hollins with a single to right. KJ Scobey doubled in the gap in right, scoring Yuhasz to give Carolina a 6-2 advantage. Georgia responded with single runs in the fourth and fifth and three in the sixth to take a 7-6 lead.

Randolph tied the game in the top of the eighth with a solo home run to right, but Georgia took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth on Daniel Jackson’s double and Bryce Calloway’s RBI infield single.

The Gamecocks had 13 hits on the day, with Scobey’s three safeties leading the Gamecock offense. Yuhasz, Randolph, LeCroy and Hollins had two hits apiece.

Brandon Stone struck out three in 4.1 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. The loss went to Alex Philpott. He struck out a batter and allowed three hits and two runs in two innings.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • The Gamecocks held Georgia without a home run in a game for the first time this season.
  • Carolina had three doubles on the day and now have 61 on the year.
  • Scobey now leads Carolina with 20 RBI this season.
