Gamecocks Finish Perfect Weekend with 4-3 Win Over Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 16 South Carolina men’s tennis team (13-5, 6-4 SEC) completed a perfect Alabama road trip on Sunday afternoon, defeating No. 23 Auburn 4-3 to follow its Friday night victory over the Crimson Tide. The Gamecocks remain undefeated on the road this season, holding a 6-0 record.

Doubles play started slow for the Gamecocks, as all three courts fell behind 1-3. The No. 3 pair of Gabe Avram and Charlie Swaine briefly cut into the deficit, but Auburn maintained control early with a 4-2 lead. South Carolina continued to chip away, with the No. 1 duo of No. 8 Paul Barbier Gazeu and Lucas da Silva trailing 3-2, the No. 2 of Atakan Karahan and Max Stenzer court evening at 3-3, and Avram & Swaine narrowing the gap to 4-3.

Auburn claimed the first result on Court 1, defeating Barbier Gazeu and da Silva 6-2, but the momentum shifted in favor of the Gamecocks on the remaining courts. Avram and Swaine picked up their second consecutive win as a pair with a 6-4 victory on Court 3 to even things up, before Karahan and Stenzer sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 position.

In singles, Gazeu gave South Carolina an early boost with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over No. 76 Billy Blaydes on Court 2. Auburn answered with a straight-set win on Court 5, but the remaining four matches quickly turned into tightly contested battles. Karahan and Stenzer each claimed their first sets before being pushed to third sets, while Swaine rebounded from a first-set loss with a 6-4 second-set win to force a decider. On Court 1, No. 15 da Silva attempted a comeback after trailing 2-5 in the opening set, closing the gap late but ultimately falling in a tiebreak.

Stenzer extended the Gamecock lead to 3-1 with a commanding 6-0 third-set performance on Court 4. Auburn added another point on Court 5 with Avram dropping in two sets, leaving the match to be decided on Courts 3 and 6. Karahan gained the edge in his third set, taking a 5-3 lead before holding off a late push to secure a 6-4 final set and clinch the match for South Carolina at 4-2. Swaine’s match on Court 6 was played out, with the freshman narrowly falling in a third-set tiebreak to bring the final score to 4-3.

Up next, the Gamecocks return to Columbia for their final two home matches of the season. First, South Carolina faces LSU on Thursday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m. before rounding out the week with Vanderbilt on Saturday, April 4 at 4:00 p.m.
