No. 23 Gamecocks Drop Game Two Sunday to No. 12 Bulldogs
STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the second straight night No. 23 South Carolina (22-14, 2-6) and No. 12 Mississippi State (31-7, 3-5) were locked in a pitcher’s duel. An error in the sixth was the difference as the Gamecocks dropped game two to the Bulldogs 2-0 Sunday night (Mar. 29).
Carolina was limited to two hits on the night, both coming from Jamie Mackay. Nealy Lamb and Jori Heard held the Bulldogs to six hits for the second straight night and had two strikeouts apiece. Heard (5-4) took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, in 3 2-3 innings of relief. Her strikeout in the fourth inning was the 300th of her career.
The Gamecocks had base runners in five of the seven innings but were only able to get a runner into scoring position in the third and in the seventh, both coming with two outs. In the third, Tate Davis drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a groundout. In the seventh, Mackay doubled down the left field line.
Mississippi State got both of their runs in the sixth on a throwing error and a single.
The rubber match of the series will be Monday night at 7 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
