No. 33 Gamecocks Upset No. 15 Lady Vols, 4-1

COLUMBIA, SC  – The No. 33 South Carolina women’s tennis took down No. 15 Tennessee, 4-1, on Thursday evening at the Carolina Tennis Center. The Gamecocks secured the upset by claiming the doubles point and three straight singles victories. 

The Gamecocks started off strong thanks to a win on Court 1 from Kaitlyn Carnicella and Jana Stojanova. The duo claimed a dominant 6-0 victory against the Tennessee pair. South Carolina was able to clinch the doubles point after No. 12 Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald defeated the No. 36 duo from Tennessee, 6-2. 

Moving into singles play, Dunyon was the first to take her opening set, claiming the frame 6-3. Buchwald followed next with a similar 6-3 first set win. Carnciella fought hard after her opponent took a 6-5 advantage as she tied things up at six apiece forcing a tiebreaker set. She went on to claim the extra frame 7-4, earning the opening set win. 

Sara Borkop also fought her way back from a deficit as she tied things up at 5-5 over on Court 3. Her opponent forced a tiebreaker set after equaling the set at 6-6. In the extra frame, Borkop jumped out to a 5-0 lead before running away with the beginning set, 7-6(3).

Dunyon captured the first singles win of the evening over on Court 6 with a 6-3, 7-5 victory. Buchwald followed suit with a 7-6(2) win to give the Gamecocks a 2-0 advantage. The Lady Vols were able to get on the board after grabbing a win on Court 5. 

Over on Court 1, Carnicella bounced back from being down 3-1 to notch five straight points, seal the victory over the No. 28 player in the country and clinch the match for South Carolina.
