Baseball Bests Missouri, 5-1, to Open Weekend Series

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Brandon Stone struck out seven in six innings of work and Patrick Evans had two hits, including a two-run home run, as the University of South Carolina baseball team opened the three-game series with a 5-1 win over Missouri Thursday night (April 9) at Taylor Stadium.

Carolina took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Erik Parker singled to left and trotted home on Patrick Evans’ sixth home run of the season. Missouri cut the Gamecocks’ lead in half in the fourth on a Jase Woita RBI groundout.

The Gamecocks scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth on a pair of dropped fly balls. KJ Scobey’s groundout scored Tyler Bak to make it 3-1 and Luke Yuhasz’s fly ball to left was dropped, scoring Talmadge LeCroy.

Carolina added insurance in the top of the eighth as Bak scored on a wild pitch, making it 5-1 Gamecocks.

Stone allowed just two hits on the night while walking only one in his six innings. Zach Russell picked up his first save of the season, striking out a pair in 2.1 innings of relief.

Evans drove in a pair and Scobey had an RBI for the Gamecock offense.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Stone now leads the team with four wins on the year.
  • LeCroy extended his reached base streak to 11 games.
  • Carolina allowed just two hits as a team in tonight’s win.
