Gamecocks Conclude Regular Season on the Road

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 12 South Carolina men’s tennis team (14-6, 7-5 SEC) is set to wrap up regular season on the road this week with matches in Georgia and Tennessee. The Gamecocks are slated to face the No. 13 Bulldogs on Friday, April 10 at 5:30 p.m. before rounding out the weekend against the No. 53 Volunteers on Sunday, April 12 at 12:00 p.m. 

GAMECOCK NOTABLES 

  • The Gamecocks split results last week, first falling 4-1 to then-No. 7 LSU before bouncing back in a 4-1 win over then- 19 Vanderbilt in their last home games of the season. Against the Commodores, South Carolina clinched the doubles point with wins from the top and bottom of the lineup.Gabe Avram and Charlie Swaine leveled the field with a 6-4 victory after Vanderbilt’s No. 2 pair picked up the first win of the match. Lucas da Silva and Paul Barbier Gazeu secured the point with a ranked win over No. 20 to set the tone early.
  • Themomentum kept up in singles play, with wins from Sean Daryabeigi (6-4, 6-3), Gazeu (6-4, 6-3), and Avram (6-3, 6-2) securing the South Carolina victory.  
  • Against the Tigers, South Carolina started off on a high note, clinching the doubles point with wins from the No. 1 (Daryabeigi & Max Stenzer) and No. 2 (Gazeu & Atakan Karahan) positions.
  • South Carolina was unable to follow through in singles, with the Tigers ultimately claiming the win following victories on courts 5, 2, 4 and 3.
  • The Gamecocks are undefeated on the road this season holding a 6-0 record. Five of those wins are over SEC opponents.
  • In dual matches, Gazeuhas the most singles wins with an overall record of 23-8. da Silva follows closely behind, going 19-8. In conference play, Gazeu is 8-3 while da Silva is 7-2 from the top of the lineup.
  • Daryabeigialso remains impactful with a 16-10 overall record. Gazeu and da Silva hold the strongest doubles record in dual match season with a 13-5 overall standing and 8-3 SEC record. Daryabeigi and Stenzer also hold a dominant 17-8 record, going 3-1 from the No. 1 spot and 5-4 from No. 2. Combined, those two duos have 10 ranked wins this season, picking up five apiece.

IN THE RANKINGS 

  • In the ITA team rankings released earlier this week, the Gamecocks moved upto the No. 12 spot which marks their highest standing of the season.
  • Da Silva leads the team in singles rankings, sitting at No. 12 forthe second week in a row. Daryabeigi follows at No. 68 and Gazeu rounds out the Garnet & Black representation at No. 124. 
  • In doubles, da Silva and Gazeuare ranked amongst the best in the nation at No. 11, while da Silva and Daryabeigi remain at No. 60. Daryabeigi and Stenzer soared 40 spots the rankings, landing at  50.  

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS 

No. 13 Georgia holds a 15-7 record and 6-5 conference standing, entering the match following a close 4-3 loss to then-No. 27 Kentucky. In the rankings, the team holds three tabs in singles with No. 40 Arda Azkara, No. 47 William Jansen and No. 108 Santiago Giamichelle. In doubles, Azkara and Giamichelle lead the Bulldogs at the No. 17 spot with a 5-6 record. 

SCOUTING THE VOLS 

No. 53 Tennessee is 10-16 this season, going 1-12 in conference play. The Vols are on a four-match losing streak, coming off a 4-0 loss from then-No. 24 Ole Miss and 4-1 loss from then-No. 12 Georgia.  

SERIES HISTORY 

  • Georgia leadsthe all-time series record with South Carolina 41-12. The Gamecocks enter Friday’s match riding on a two-year win streak with the last meeting being a dominant 4-0 showing at home. 
  • The Vols lead the all-time series record between the two programs 40-24, with the Gamecocks winning four of the last six meetings and currently holding a two-match win streak.
