Gamecocks Fall to Bulldogs in Starkville
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The No. 25 South Carolina women’s tennis team fell to No. 55 Mississippi State, 4-0, on Thursday evening in Starkville, Miss.
The Gamecocks came out strong in doubles play, with the No. 17 pair of Helena Buchwald and Lauren Friedman setting the tone with an impressive 6-2 win over the No. 11-ranked Mississippi State duo. The Bulldogs responded on the other two courts, as Gianna Oboniye and Athina Pitta defeated Kaitlyn Carnicella and Jana Stojanova 6-4, and Emma Cohen and Carolina Troiano topped Jane Dunyon and Sara Borkop 6-3 to claim the doubles point.
South Carolina battled in singles play, with several Gamecocks locked in tight matches across the courts. Mississippi State picked up the first three completed singles wins, as Mia Robinson defeated Taylor Goetz 6-2, 6-2, Cha Kempenaers-Pocz topped No. 41 Buchwald 6-3, 6-3, and Chiara Di Genova earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Borkop. Multiple matches remained in progress when play was halted, including No. 38 Carnicella and Stojanova. Dunyon was leading her opponent from court six in a third set.
The Gamecocks will be back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader against No. 50 Alabama and SC State. First serve for each match is set for noon and 4 p.m., respectively.
