Gamecocks to Wrap Up Busy Spring Slate
COLUMBIA, SC – The Gamecock Women’s Soccer program has had a busy spring, taking on opponents for some spring ball action and traveling across the country to Italy for a once in a lifetime experience.
“We have accomplished a lot already this spring and look forward to the last few weeks of training and upcoming matches,” head coach Shelley Smith said. “It’s been successful overall not just with our game results, but also to see the individual development that has occurred, in addition to the team growth as they work through various tactics and systems of play. We have a couple of transfer players in addition to the incoming freshmen class who are all already here training and integrating well into the team. We are excited to see the potential they have as a group as we continue through the spring and into the fall preseason after a summer of further development.”
The Gamecocks started off the spring slate by taking on Virginia Tech, winning that matchup in shutout fashion 3-0. The squad then set off for Italy, taking in the sights and learning local culture, before facing Roma in a beautiful mountain landscape. South Carolina tied Roma 1-1, then continued their trip with a 2-1 win over Como.
After the overseas trip, the Gamecocks returned home to Columbia to face College of Charleston in Stone Stadium. A beautiful day of soccer concluded with a 2-1 win for South Carolina over the Cougars. The squad then rounded out spring play at home with a 3-0 victory over ETSU.
The spring slate will round up with one last game on the road, with the Gamecocks playing in Charlotte on April 18.
