Phillips' Stellar Outing Lifts Baseball Past Missouri, 1-0
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Amp Phillips struck out 10 and did not allow a run in eight innings of work and a run in the top of the fourth was the difference in the University of South Carolina baseball team’s 1-0 win over Missouri Friday night (April 10) at Taylor Stadium to secure a series victory.
The Gamecocks plated a run in the top of the fourth as Tyler Bak tripled for the first hit of the game. He scored on a throwing error off a Talmadge LeCroy ground ball to short. Carolina had three hits on the day, the Bak triple, a double from Ethan Lizama and a single from Patrick Evans.
Phillips was outstanding. He struck out seven of the first nine batters and had 1-2-3 frames in first, second, third, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. He picked up his third win of the season and set a season-high in strikeouts while walking just one and allowing five hits. Connor Chicoli picked up a strikeout and Alex Philpott got the final out for his second save of the year.
In the bottom of the ninth, Missouri led off the frame with a pair of hits but an attempted double steal ended up being a caught stealing of third. After a strikeout, a flyout ended the game.
