Men’s Tennis Rolls Past Ole Miss, Advances to SEC Quarterfinals
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – The No. 13 South Carolina men’s tennis team (16-7, 8-6 SEC) faced off against No. 25 Ole Miss at the Mitchell Tennis Center in the second round of the SEC Championship on Thursday afternoon. The Gamecocks came away with a dominant 4-1 victory against the Rebels, clinching the doubles point and picking up three straight set singles wins. With the win, South Carolina advances to the quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive season, facing No. 6 Mississippi State on Friday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m. (ET).
In doubles, South Carolina claimed the opening point with wins on courts one and two. The No. 7 ranked pair of Lucas da Silva and Paul Barbier Gazeu earned a 6-3 victory over No. 26 Isac Stromberg and Kai Milburn on the top court, marking their seventh ranked win of the season.
Ole Miss followed up with a win on court three, where Matthieu Chambonniere and Benjamin Martin defeated Charlie Swaine and Gabe Avram 6-4 to level things out. Max Stenzer and Sean Daryabeigi pushed the momentum back in favor of the Gamecocks with a 7-5 win on court two to secure the doubles point.
The Gamecocks maintained control early into singles play, grabbing five first victories across the six courts. The Rebels made a brief comeback, tying the score to 1-1 with a win over Stenzer on court four but the Gamecocks quickly retaliated from the bottom of the lineup as Avram cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win.
The energy shifted to the top of the lineup, where da Silva defeated No. 81 Stefano D’Agostino 6-4, 6-3, earning a rematch win after falling to the Rebel in the regular season. Barbier Gazeu sealed the deal with a ranked win from the No. 2 position, defeating No. 119 Matthieu Chambonniere 6-4, 6-4 to send the Gamecocks to the quarterfinals.
