Baseball Falls to Mississippi State in Friday Contest

COLUMBIA – No. 17 Mississippi State hit four home runs on its way to a 5-3 win over the University of South Carolina baseball team Friday night (April 17) at Founders Park.

The Bulldogs opened with two solo shots and a two-run home run in the first three frames to extend to an early four-run lead.

In the fifth, back-to-back singles from Tyler Bak and Luke Yuhasz set up a three-run blast for Ethan Lizama, his first of the year, to bring the score back within 4-3.

Mississippi State hit another home run in the top of the ninth to put the Bulldogs ahead, 5-3. Carolina put runners on second and third in the ninth but could not get the runs across, giving Mississippi State the Friday night win.

Lizama, Bak and Yuhasz led Carolina’s offense with two hits apiece. The loss went to Brandon Stone, who allowed four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • South Carolina’s pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts, allowing just two walks on the night.
  • Logan Prisco struck out a pair and did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings of work.
  • The bottom three of Carolina’s lineup was 6-for-11 on the night.
