Gamecocks Fall to No. 6 Mississippi State in SEC Quarterfinals

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – The No. 13 South Carolina men’s tennis team (16-8, 8-7 SEC) took on No. 6 Mississippi State in the SEC Championship quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The Gamecocks ended their championship run in a 4-0 loss to the Bulldogs.

Doubles play opened with South Carolina at a disadvantage, as all three courts fell behind by multiple games early. On court two, Sean Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer battled back from a 5-3 deficit to even the score at 5-5, but play went unfinished with the pair trailing 5-6. Ole Miss secured the doubles point with wins on courts three and one, as Gabe Avram and Charlie Swaine fell 6-3, followed by No. 7 Lucas da Silva and Paul Barbier Gazeu dropping a 6-3 decision on the top court.

The Gamecocks struggled early into doubles play with the Bulldogs picking up five first set wins. Barbier Gazeu trailed for the majority of his opening set but surged through his final three games to claim South Carolina’s lone first set win in a 7-5 showing.

The Bulldogs picked up two more points to lead 3-0, after wins over Karahan and Daryabeigi. The clincher came on court four, where Raphael Vaksmann defeated Stenzer 6-4, 6-3.

The Gamecocks await their NCAA Tournament fate, which will be announced at a later date.
