Eyes on Regionals
There are only two more weekends left in the regular season for the Gamecocks before the grind of postseason competition begins with the SEC Outdoor Championship (May 14-16). This year’s NCAA East Regional will be held in Lexington, Ky. on Wednesday, May 27 – Saturday, May 30. To qualify for the regional meet, individuals must be ranked inside the Top 48, while relays need to be positioned within the Top 24.
As it stands prior to this weekend, South Carolina would have 38 entries into the regional competition between both the men’s and the women’s teams. The women’s team makes up 27 of those 38 entries, led individually by Salma Elbadra (1500m) and Akala Garrett (400mH) who rank first in the region in their respective events. Both the women’s 4x100m and 4x400m relays also sit comfortably atop the East Region leaderboard. In all, there are 12 Gamecock women rankings inside the Top 10 on the regional leaderboard.
As for the men, there are a total of 11 qualifying marks as of now, including a trio ranked inside the Top 10.
