Gamecocks Sweep Richmond, Advance to NCAA Round of 32

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 13 South Carolina men’s tennis team (17-8, 8-6 SEC) advanced to the Round of 32 of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament with a 4-0 win over Richmond on Friday evening. The Gamecocks took an early advantage with the doubles point and held onto the lead throughout the match. 

Sean Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer got the match started with a dominant 6-0 shutout over Richmond’s Paxton Prichard and Sam Rathmanner on court four. From the top of the lineup, Lucas da Silva and Paul Barbier Gazeu traded sets with their opponents, but controlled the lead at 3-2. Meanwhile, from the third position, Charlie Swaine and Gabe Avram won three straight sets to lead 4-1. The duo clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Grant Cohen and Charlie Burdell, leaving da Silva and Gazeu’s match unfinished. 

The Gamecocks carried momentum into singles play, taking first-set victories on five of the six courts. Da Silva (6-1), Daryabeigi (7-5), Stenzer (7-6(2)), Karahan (6-1) and Avram (6-3) took the lead across their courts. Karahan finished his match first, taking a 6-2 second-set victory on court four, giving the Gamecocks a 2-0 advantage. No. 14 da Silva got South Carolina one step closer to clinching the win, posting another 6-1 win in his second set. Swaine, the lone Gamecock to drop his first set, battled back to take the second 6-4 but No. 73 Sean Daryabeigi secured the 4-0 sweep with a victory on court two, taking his second set 6-2. 

South Carolina will face Michigan State in the Round of 32 at the Carolina Outdoor Tennis Center on Saturday, May 1, at 4:00 p.m.
