South Carolina Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament After Sweeping Maryland

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 32 South Carolina women’s tennis team advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after defeating No. 33 Maryland 4-0 on Friday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Gamecocks set the tone early with a scorching 6-0 doubles win from court one. No. 12 Lauren Friendman and Helena Buchwald picked up their sixth ranked win of the season as they took down the No. 32 doubles pair from Maryland.

Jane Dunyon and Sara Borkop fell short on court three, allowing Maryland to tie things up in doubles play. Kaitlyn Carnicella and Jana Stojanova were up 5-2 before the Terps pair staged a comeback to force extra play. Carnicella and Stojanova regained momentum and took the court 7-5 and secured the doubles point for the Gamecocks.

To begin singles play, Carnicella and Buchwald both earned first-set wins from courts one and two, respectively. Friedman picked up her own first set from court six. Borkop and Stojanova pushed play from their respective courts into tiebreaker sets. Carnicella was first to claim a singles victory as she took court one, 6-1, 6-1. Buchwald followed suit with a 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 117 Oliwia Orlinska to put the Gamecocks ahead 3-0. Friedman clinched the match for South Carolina with a 7-5, 6-3 win from court six.

The Gamecocks will play the winner of UNC vs. Charleston Southern tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the Chewning Tennis Center.
