Gamecocks Take on No. 5 UVA in NCAA Super Regionals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 13 South Carolina men’s tennis team (18-8, 8-6 SEC) faces ACC Championship runner-up No. 5 Virginia on the road in the NCAA Super Regionals on Friday, May 8 at 5:00 p.m.

Each super-regional site will feature two teams playing a single-elimination format. The super-regional winners advance to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., where the eight teams compete for the national championship, May 14-17.

Gamecock Notables

  • South Carolina’s path to its sixth consecutive Super Regional included a 4-0 sweep of Richmond and 4-1 takedown of No. 16 Michigan State last week at home.
  • Against the Spiders, the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairs in addition to Lucas da Silva, Sean Daryabeigi and Atakan Karahan singles’ efforts carried the team to a sweep in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
  • In similar fashion, the Gamecocks clinched the doubles point against the Spartans to open the second-round match. Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer went 2-0 in doubles on the weekend as the pair defeated MSU’s No. 2 duo 6-4, while da Silva and Paul Barbier Gazeu secured the first point of the match in a 7-5 showing.
  • Barbier Gazeu carried his momentum into singles where he upset No. 15 Matthew Forbes 7-5, 6-2, marking it his highest ranked win in his collegiate career. Stenzer picked up a straight set win as well from the No. 4 position while Gabe Avram clinched the 4-1 win for the Gamecocks from the bottom of the lineup.
  • South Carolina boasts six total ITA rankings across singles and doubles. In singles the Gamecocks have three players in the top 85 led by da Silva at No. 14, followed by Daryabeigi (No. 73) and Barbier Gazeu (No. 85).
  • In doubles, da Silva and Barbier Gazeu pace the lineup at No. 6, which is the pair’s highest ranking of the season. Daryabeigi is featured in two ranked pairings: ranked No. 65 with Max Stenzer and No. 63 with da Silva.
  • Two Gamecocks earned SEC postseason recognition, with da Silva landing First Team All-SEC honors and Barbier Gazeu named Second Team All-SEC and to the All-Freshman Team.
  • Barbier Gazeu holds the most singles wins this season with a 25-9 overall record followed by da Silva who is 20-8 and Daryabeigi with a 18-13 standing. Barbier Gazeu and da Silva are 16-6 in doubles while Daryabeigi and Stenzer are 21-9.

Scouting the Cavaliers

  • Virginia is 24-4 overall this season with an undefeated 12-0 record at home.
  • The Cavaliers had notable wins early in the season, defeating both then-No. 3 TCU and then-No. 2 Texas during the road opener. At ITA National Team Indoors, UVA made a run to the semifinals and ultimately fell to then-No. 2 Ohio State.
  • After the Ohio State loss, the Cavaliers went on a 14-2 run with both losses coming from Wake Forest – once during regular season and once in the ACC Championship match.
  • UVA’s path to Super Regionals included wins over Rider and No. 26 Columbia.
  • The Cavaliers have seven combined tabs in the ITA rankings across singles and doubles. In singles Dylan Dietrich headlines the team as the No. 2 player in the nation, holding a 26-4 overall record. Dietrich is 21-1 from the No. 1 position. Keegan Rice is No. 15 with a 32-5 overall record. Jangjum Kim rounds out the rankings at No. 81.
  • In doubles, Dietrich and Mans Dahlberg are No. 2 with an undefeated 14-0 record. The pair spent a majority of their time playing together during fall season, ultimately winning the 2025 NCAA Individuals Doubles Championship. The duo then took a hiatus during dual match season until the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament.
  • Dahlberg & Kim are No. 23 followed by Dietrich & Stiles Brockett at No. 45 and Kim & Keegan Rice at No. 76

Series History

  • The Gamecocks and Cavaliers are locked at a 9-9 record in the all-time series history.
  • The last time the two programs faced each other was in 2025, when the Gamecocks fell 5-2 at home.
  • South Carolina’s last victory against the program was in 2024 when the Gamecocks defeated then-No. 1 Virginia 4-3 in Charlottesville.
  • The Gamecocks went on a seven-match win streak from 1976-1998, marking the longest win streak in the series.
