Gamecocks Conclude Season at UVA in 4-1 Loss
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 13 South Carolina men’s tennis team (18-9, 8-6 SEC) put up a gritty fight against No. 5 UVA in the NCAA Super Regionals, nearly battling back from a 3-0 deficit after pushing multiple courts to third sets, but ultimately could not complete the comeback as the team fell 4-1 to the Wahoos to conclude its 2025-26 season.
Doubles started off with Paul Barbier Gazeu and Lucas da Silva claiming the first point over the defending NCAA individual champions, but Mans Dahlberg and Dylan Dietrich quickly tied it up 1-1 to level it out. The Gamecocks respond with another point in their favor, winning it on a deuce to take back the lead at 2-1. At bottom of the lineup, Gabe Avram and Charlie Swaine were locked 1-1 while Max Stenzer and Sean Daryabeigi trailed 3-0.
The Gamecocks began to struggle as Barbier Gazeu and da Silva’s opponents tied up the score to 2-2 and eventually took the lead at 3-2 while both No. 2 and 3 positions were trailing 3-1. The Gamecock’s no. 1 pair continued to battle, tying up the score at 3-3 while Stenzer & Daryabeigi trailed 4-1 and Avram & Swaine trailed 4-2. Things started to shift into favor of the Wahoos as all three courts took 5-3 or 5-2 leads. UVA ultimately claimed the doubles point with wins from the No. 2 (6-2) and 3 (6-3) positions.
The Gamecocks started to wake up in singles, with Daryabeigi, Stenzer and da Silva taking early leads in their first sets. On the remaining three courts, South Carolina trailed narrowly by one or tied up scores. The Gamecocks stepped on the gas, with four players grabbing first set wins. Daryabeigi, Stenzer and da Silva won their opening sets 7-5 with da Silva taking a set from the No. 1 ranked singles player in the nation, Dylan Dietrich. Avram became the fifth Gamecock to claim a first set, winning 7-5 thanks to a double fault.
The Wahoos extended their lead to 2-0 with a straight set win over Barbier Gazeu from the No. 2 position. Meanwhile, Stenzer, Daryabeigi and Karahan headed to third sets after dropping their seconds. UVA pushed its lead to 3-0, one away from clinching with a win over Karahan, but the Gamecocks quickly responded with their first win of the match as Stenzer upset No. 58 Andres Santamarta in three sets. Despite da Silva leading in his third set and Avram battling in his, the clincher for Virginia came on court three, where Daryabeigi fell in three sets to No. 114 Jangjun Kim.
