Baseball Falls to Alabama on Sunday Afternoon
COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team battled back from a 7-1 deficit, scoring four runs in the eighth and one in the ninth but ultimately fell short, 7-6, Sunday afternoon (May 10) at Founders Park.
The Crimson Tide plated three runs on three hits to take the early lead in the first. They would plate two more on a sacrifice fly and a fielding error after loading the bases in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0. Alabama continued to capitalize and put up two more unearned runs on a fielding error, loading the bases for a sacrifice fly to lead by seven.
The Gamecocks scored their first run of the game in the sixth after Ethan Lizama drove Will Craddock home on an RBI single. Craddock reached base on a two-out stand-up double.
Carolina mounted a four-run inning in the eighth to bring the game within two runs. Lizama reached on a fielder’s choice, advancing Tyler Bak home on a fielding error. Luke Yuhasz brought in Will Craddock on a sacrifice fly before KJ Scobey homered to left field to make it 7-5.
Dawson Harmon singled up the middle in the ninth to score Jake Randoph, putting the tying run on base, but the Gamecocks were unable to plate another in the frame.
Scobey led the offense with two hits and two RBI. Alex Valentin took the loss on the night, giving up six hits and five runs in 4.2 innings of work.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Alex Philpott and Parker Marlatt were scoreless in relief for the Gamecocks, tossing for 2.2 and one inning, respectively, giving up just one hit in the last 3.2 innings.
- Scobey now has 16 multi-hit games and 12 multi-RBI performances.
- Eight of the nine Gamecock starters had at least one hit.
